GRRM in Winterfell

Northern Ireland

George R.R. Martin recently travelled to Northern Ireland to visit the real Westeros.

By Stefan Roesch

When GRRM was granted an International Recognition Award as part of this year's Irish Book Awards, he couldn't resist heading north to Castle Ward - the location of Winterfell in Season 1.

And despite the fact that he authored the epic fantasy series, George was not immune to the effects of experiencing such an iconic film location first-hand: "This is only the second time I've visited Castle Ward. It's like Winterfell is coming to life here. So, that's a little surreal and a little mind-boggling."

Listen to George talking about his visit to Castle Ward/Winterfell in this beautifully shot little clip:

Should you decide to follow in George's footsteps, Castle Ward has plenty of GoT action on offer:

You can practise your archery skills in the very place where the Stark children honed their skills with the bow.

Rent a bike and pedal to nearby Audley's Castle which also features prominently in the show.

We reckon this themed banquet run by Winterfell Tours is also pretty awesome.

Alas, time to hit the road and explore more of Northern Ireland's GoT locations, including...
