Lough Tay, Ireland: Vikings

Ireland: VikingsLough Tay: Village of Kattegat

Location

There are two reasons why this stunning lake in the heart of the Wicklow mountains is commonly referred to as 'The Guinness Lake'. Firstly, it's actually owned by the Guinness family and secondly, the white sand at the top of the lake resembles the froth on a pint of the popular Irish stout.

In 2012, the flat area at the lake head was used for the construction of the village of Kattegatt, home of the show's hero Ragnar Lothbrok.

The white sand at the head of the lake is artificial and was brought in by the Guinness family.

While the private lake shore is not accessible to the general public, the view towards the lake still ranks amongst the top attractions in County Wicklow. The best lookout points are from the car parks along the R759 Road. The short hike to the J.B. Malone memorial stone, part of the trail to the summit of Djouce mountain, provides an alternative and less crowded beauty spot.

Much of the Wicklow Mountains are a designated National Park. The landscape is dominated by upland blanket bog and heath cover, with wide vistas in all directions.
