Set during WW2, traumatised young orphan Liesel finds comfort in the written word and steals books to read. Meanwhile in the basement of her home, a Jewish refugee is kept hidden by her foster parents.

Finding a suitable main location was a challenging task for the filmmakers, as several German city councils turned down the necessary filming permits due to the Nazi symbolism shown in the pivotal scene - the burning of the books.

However, the film-friendly city of Görlitz (also known as 'Görliwood') agreed to host the shoot and allowed the film team to transform the Untermarkt square into a 1940s film set.

Key Scenes

The key scenes of the story focus on the burning of books the Nazis declared as degenerate art ('Entartete Kunst').
