Village of Falkland

Scotland: OutlanderVillage of Falkland

OutlanderFilm Location

Nestled amongst the Scottish Highlands, the picturesque village of Falkland was used to portray the city of Inverness, where Claire and Frank arrive on their second honeymoon in 1946.

They check into Mrs Baird’s bed and breakfast, known as the Covenanter Hotel in real life, before meeting the Reverend Wakefield.

In addition to the charming main square, a number of side streets made it on screen in Season 2, Episode 12: The Hail Mary. These include Brunton Street, Rotten Row and the mouth of Sharps Close, which doubles as Inverness in the year 1746.

One of the houses in Brunton Street is recognisable as McGilvrey’s Boarding House. It was here that an ill Alex Randall stayed, cared for by Mary Hawkins. The three streets will be memorable from the scene in which Claire and Murtagh walk away from the boarding house.

Historically the village is known for its Falkland Palace, the country residence of the Stewart kings and queens and a favourite place of Mary Queen of Scots.

Season 1, Episode 1: Sassenach

In 1946 Claire Randall, a former WWII combat nurse, is visiting Inverness, Scotland, with her husband Frank. The pair are getting to know each other again after their wartime separation. Frank is researching his family history, in particular his 18th Century ancestor Jonathan "Black Jack" Randall. The morning after observing a modern Druid ritual at the standing stones on the hill of Craigh na Dun, Claire touches one of the stones, and wakes up lying on the ground - transported back in time. She soon realises she is in the middle of a skirmish between English redcoats and rebel Highlanders, and comes face to face with Frank's double, Randall, who is captain of the Dragoons. A Scotsman rescues Claire and she meets Jamie Fraser. As they flee, she sets his dislocated arm and later treats his bullet wound. Claire is brought to Castle Leoch, and realizes that she has somehow traveled back in time (source: Wikipedia).
