Hopetoun House

Scotland: OutlanderHopetoun House

OutlanderFilm Location

The vast grounds of Hopetoun House saw a substantial amount of filming throughout seasons 1 to 4 of Outlander. Set in 6,500 acres of rolling parkland, the stately home is testament to the aristocratic grandeur of the early 18th century.

The interiors have not been changed for three centuries and reflect the elegance of the Georgian era. Please note that the rooms are only accessible on a guided tour.

The living room features in the scene when Jamie talks with Lord Dunsany at the start of his time in Helwater (Season 3).

The Red Drawing Room is probably the most famous room in the house, at least for Outlander fans. This is where Claire and Jamie meet the Duke to request Jamie’s pardon (Season 1, Episode 10: By The Pricking Of My Thumbs).

The lawn to the rear of the house was the location for the duel between the Duke of Sandringham (assisted by Jamie) and the head of the McDonald clan.

Other scenes filmed at Hopetoun include:

  • The courtyard behind the Stables Tearoom which features as a Parisian street location in Season 2.
  • The exterior facade was also used as the home of the Earl of Ellesmere (Season 3, Episode 4: Of Lost Things).
  • The guest room where Mary recovers from the rape attack in in Paris (Season 2, Episode 4: La Dame Blanche).

The House is open to the public from Easter until the last Sunday in September. Private arrangements for special pre-booked group visits may be possible by calling ahead.

The address is Queensferry, South Queensferry EH30 9RW. Make sure you use this address. Otherwise, you might end up at the wrong gate which could mean a substantial detour around the vast grounds.

Travel Tips

Located on the wider Hopetoun Estate is one of the show's most iconic locations: Midhope Castle, better known as the fictional Lallybroch, the family home of Jamie Fraser. Access to the castle is fairly restricted and only possible at certain times so please plan ahead.
