Hidden Village of Galboly: Runestone

Northern Ireland: Game of ThronesHidden Village of Galboly: Runestone

Game of ThronesFilm Location

As one of the most remote GOT locations in Northern Ireland, the final kilometre to the hidden village of Galboly has to be made on foot, traversing steep and sometimes muddy ground. Nestled amongst one of the nine glens of Antrim above Garron Point, this area of outstanding beauty stands in as Runestone in the Vale of Arryn.

Once you've caught your breath, you'll experience breathtaking vistas over the surrounding mountains and valleys.

People lived in Galboly until the 1950s, although the 1951 census recorded a population of just six. The last remaining inhabitant, a monk, lived in one of the cottages until he died at the age of 73 in 2013. Originally, the village consisted of ten houses, but most of them are now ruins.

Key Scenes

Runestone appears twice in the show. In Season 5, Episode 1: The Wars to Come, Littlefinger and Sansa watch Robin Arryn as he practices his (non-existing) sword fighting skills.

In Season 6, Littlefinger returns to Runestone with a falcon as a gift for Robin and forces Lord Yohn Royce to gather the knights of the Vale to ride to the aid of Sansa who, in the meantime, has been married the bastard Ramsay (Season 6, Episode 4: Book of the Stranger).

The Nobles of the Vale have gathered at Runestone to hold an important meeting (Season 5, Episode 1).

Map

Head along the A2 where you go past the Tower Road. About 350 metres further along you will see a small road sign saying 'Welcome to East Antrim'. Park here and walk up the (uneven!) track for about a kilometre.

Travel Tips

Another highlight in the Glens of Antrim is the Glenariff Forest Park. It offers some lovely forest trails (a rarity in Northern Ireland) and three different waterfalls.
