New Zealand: The Light Between OceansSt. Barnabus Church, Warrington

Alistair Wright, Warden of St. Barnabus church, recalls the moment when the location scout from The Light Between Oceans first saw the church and grounds: “Perfect” he said, “this is exactly what we’re looking for.” And standing in the grounds of the beautiful English-style country church, you can see why.

From the very moment you walk through the charming wrought-iron gate and into the cemetery where Tom Sherbourne (Michael Fassbender) sees Hannah Roennfeldt (Rachel Weisz) grieving at the grave of her husband and young daughter, you feel transported into the world of the film.

Key Scenes

In the trailer for LBO you can see the beautiful little church and graveyard from 0:46 - 0:53. This is where the key scene between Tom Sherbourne (Michael Fassbender) and Hannah Roennfeldt (Rachel Weisz) plays out when he sees her grieving at the tombstone for her lost husband and child. Little does Hannah know that Isabel and Tom are at the church to christen their 'Lucy', and that the child they are pretending is theirs is the very child Hannah has lost.

An extra tip for the keen: carry on along the scenic and historic stretch of road appropriately called Coast Road for stunning views of the Southern Ocean. The house used for the final scenes of the film, when the adult Lucy-Grace (played by Caren Pistorius) comes to visit Tom with her baby boy, is about two kilometers past the settlement of Seacliff - a wooden house perched high on hill with it’s back to the sea.

The house just past the settlement of Seacliff.

Carry on another couple of kilometers to the Puketeraki lookout for majestic views of Karitane and Waikouaiti.
