Glenfinnan Viaduct

Scotland: Harry PotterGlenfinnan Viaduct: On Route to Hogwarts

Location

Glenfinnan viaduct, constructed between July 1897 and October 1898, spans a 380 metre long valley on the route between Fort William and Mallaig. Because he was able to overcome the substantial technical difficulties of creating such a bridge, the viaduct's engineer Robert McAlpine was knighted for his achievement.

Getting the same view of the viaduct as depicted in the main image is a bit of a scramble but well worth it - we visited back in 2010.

The nearby Glenfinnan Monument, erected in 1815 at the head of Loch Shiel, is a tribute to the Jacobite clansmen who fought for Prince Charles Edward Stuart in the 18th century.

Key Scenes

The viaduct features in three Harry Potter movies: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

The most memorable scene involving the bridge is certainly in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, where Arthur Weasley’s baby blue flying Ford Anglia lands on the viaduct.

Should you want to travel through this magnificent landscape Harry-style, you can hop on the Jacobite steam train, where - time permitting - the train may pause to allow you to take in the stunning view.
